Greece has about forty civil airports, many on small islands. Athens is the hub of the domestic network; in summer, however, many island airports receive direct charter and low-cost flights from across Europe. Since 2017 fourteen regional airports have been run under concession by Fraport Greece.
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH)
Athens International Airport is at Spata, about 30 km east of the centre. It is modern, efficient and one of the busiest hubs in the eastern Mediterranean.

Smaller islands such as Paros, Naxos, Milos, Karpathos, Lemnos, Kythira, Ikaria, Astypalea and others have small airports with domestic flights, mostly from Athens. See also airports of Crete.
Domestic flights
The main airlines are Aegean Airlines, its subsidiary Olympic Air, and Sky Express. From Athens almost all islands and main cities are under an hour away. Some routes between smaller islands are subsidised as public service. Flying is often a good alternative to long ferry trips, such as to Rhodes or Crete, but checked bags cost extra on basic fares.
