The Sporades, "the scattered ones", are a group of islands north of Euboea, off the Pelion peninsula. Unlike the Cyclades they are covered in Aleppo pine, olives and scrub reaching down to the beaches. The sea is clear and sheltered, and in the north of the group lies Greece's first marine park, a refuge for the monk seal.
The islands
| Island | Character | Don't miss |
|---|---|---|
| Skiathos | Over 60 beaches, lively and fashionable | Koukounaries, Lalaria, the old town |
| Skopelos | Green, elegant, location of Mamma Mia! | Chora, Agios Ioannis sto Kastri, monasteries |
| Alonissos | Protected nature, peace and quiet | Marine park, old Chora, boat trips |
| Skyros | Further away and different, living traditions | Chora, Skyrian ponies, carnival |
Getting there
Skiathos has an airport with domestic flights and direct summer flights from many European countries. Ferries leave Volos and Agios Konstantinos, calling at Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos in turn. Skyros is reached from Kymi on Euboea, or by air. In summer there are also connections from Thessaloniki.
When to go
June to September; the sea is cooler than in the Cyclades and the climate more humid. September is ideal for hiking and swimming with fewer crowds.
