Poros is a Saronic Gulf island separated from the Peloponnese coast by a channel just a few hundred metres wide: opposite lies the town of Galatas, a few minutes away by small boat. It is made of two parts joined by a small bridge: little volcanic Sferia, where the town stands, and larger, wooded Kalavria.
The town climbs a hill like an amphitheatre, crowned by the clock tower (1927), with white houses and tiled roofs. On Kalavria are the remains of the temple of Poseidon, where in 322 BC the orator Demosthenes took his own life rather than fall into Macedonian hands, and the monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, set in greenery. On the opposite coast the Lemonodasos is a grove of tens of thousands of lemon trees. Beaches: Askeli, Love Bay, Neorio, Monastiri.
Getting there
From Piraeus there are ferries (about 2.5 hours) and hydrofoils (about an hour); you can also drive to Galatas in the Peloponnese and cross by ferry.
