Skopelos is a Sporades island between Skiathos and Alonissos, one of the greenest in Greece, covered in pines, olives and orchards. In 2008 it became world famous as a location for the film Mamma Mia!.
Chora rises like an amphitheatre above the harbour, with white houses, slate roofs, wooden balconies and, it is said, over a hundred churches and chapels; at the top are the remains of a Venetian castle. Several monasteries stand in the hills above town. At the other end of the island, Glossa looks down on the north coast.
