Thassos is Greece's northernmost island, off the coast of Kavala in eastern Macedonia. It is almost round, mountainous and covered in pine woods down to the sea. In antiquity it was a wealthy colony of Paros, thanks to its gold mines and white marble, which is still quarried today and exported worldwide.
