Folegandros is a narrow, rocky island in the southern Cyclades, between Milos and Santorini. For centuries it was a place of exile, and it still feels secluded. Its Chora is considered one of Greece's finest: built on the edge of a 200-metre cliff, it has squares shaded by tamarisks, churches, tavernas and the medieval Kastro, whose houses form a wall above the drop. A zigzag path climbs to the Panagia church, with a magnificent view at sunset.
The best beaches are reached on foot or by boat: Katergo, from the port of Karavostasis, Agios Nikolaos and Livadaki on the west coast, Angali with a few tavernas. The village of Ano Meria, scattered among terraced fields, has a small folklore museum. Try matsata, fresh pasta with rabbit or rooster.
Getting there
There is no airport: ferries from Piraeus take 4-9 hours; there are connections with Milos, Santorini, Sikinos, Ios and Paros. A bus links the port with Chora and Ano Meria.
