Sikinos is a small island in the Cyclades between Ios and Folegandros, with a few hundred inhabitants. It has stayed away from mass tourism and keeps the rhythms of farming life.
Chora, made up of the two villages of Kastro and Chorio, stands on the ridge above the sea; Kastro keeps its wall-like houses and the square with the church of Pantanassa. Above the village the fortified monastery of Zoodochos Pigi dominates the island. A fine walk leads to the Episkopi, a Roman funerary temple turned into a Byzantine church. The main beaches are Alopronia, by the port, Agios Georgios and Malta, reached on foot or by boat. Wine is made on the island from local grapes.
Getting there
Ships come from Piraeus (5-10 hours) and link Sikinos with Ios, Folegandros, Santorini and Naxos. A bus links the port with Chora.
