Oinousses is a small archipelago between Chios and the Turkish coast, made up of a main island and a few islets. It is famous in Greece as a home of shipowners: some families who own large merchant fleets come from here, and their villas overlook the harbour beside fishermen's houses. The island has a merchant marine academy and a Maritime Museum with models, instruments and ship paintings.
At the harbour entrance the statue of the Sailor's Mother gazes out to sea, in memory of those who leave and those who never returned. The convent of the Evangelismos stands on the hill. Beaches are small and quiet: Kastro, Bilali, Gialoudi, Fourkeri.
Getting there
A small boat links Oinousses with the port of Chios in about an hour; some ferries on the Lesbos line call here. There is no airport.
