Anafi is a small island east of Santorini, the southernmost of the eastern Cyclades. In myth Apollo raised it from the sea with a flash of light to shelter the storm-tossed Argonauts: hence its name, said to mean "revealed".
The white, windswept Chora sits on a hill above the port of Agios Nikolaos. The south coast has a string of beaches reached by a footpath: Roukounas, the longest, with sand and tamarisks, Katsouni, Mikros Roukounas and Monastiri. At the eastern tip rises the rock of Kalamos, a limestone monolith over 460 metres high, with the monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa at its foot and a chapel on top, reached by a demanding hike.
Getting there
Ships come from Piraeus (about 9-12 hours) and Santorini, not daily out of season. A small boat links Anafi with Santorini more often in summer. There is no airport.
